The Crayola brand of art materials is recognised around the world. Beginning its life as a supplier of industrial pigments, Crayola quickly grew into the arts market and its products are now sold in more than eighty countries.

Although Crayola is perhaps best known for its crayons, the company’s first venture into the art supplies market was with white and coloured chalks. The brand was the brainchild of cousins C. Harold Smith and Edwin Binney, who created the famous wax crayons in 1903. Alice Binney, wife of Edwin, came up with the name ‘Crayola’ by combining craie, the French word for “chalk”, with ola, a derivative of the Latin word for “oily”. The first products comprised a small yet complete colour palette but the Crayola range of colours has steadily extended, reaching the massive 133 varieties it boasts today.
