For over 85 years Swizzels Matlow have been providing the nation with yummy sweet treats! Founded by the Matlow brothers, Alfred and Maurice in London in 1928, they launched the much-loved Rainbow Drops before being forced to relocate following the London Blitz in 1940.

Over the years the confectionery brand have gone from strength to strength employing over 600 people at their facilities in New Mills, Derbyshire, and are famed for a selection of sweet treats including Love Hearts, Refreshers, Parma Violets and Fizzers.

Love Hearts

Last year marked the 60th anniversary of Love Hearts and their popularity shows no sign of letting up as seven million Love Hearts are produced every day.

Originally launched to use as a gift inside a cracker they fast became a unique and fun way of expressing one’s feelings. Over the years many other messages were introduced including ‘Kiss Me, ‘My Girl and ‘Heart Throb’ there are currently around 150 different messages in production today.

Love Hearts are Loved by people all over the world and are, arguably, Swizzels Matlow’s most popular and well known sweet treat. Rainbow Drops

Launched before the war Rainbow Drops became an instant success and still they are as popular as ever. Originally created in a sealed vessel and fired out through a cannon, Rainbow Drops were sold loose and scooped into bags. Last year Swizzels Matlow produced a staggering 14 million bags of Rainbow Drops, that’s enough to fill 25 Olympic sized swimming pools, not that we’ve tried or anything!

Drumsticks

Believe it or not the first Drumstick Lolly ever created was a complete fluke! In 1957 Trevor Matlow, Alfred’s son, was experimenting with a new chew wrapping machine when he realised it was possible to make a lolly consisting of two flavours, milk and raspberry, and insert a stick. Over the years Swizzels Matlow released other flavours including Toffee Apple, Pear Drops, Apple & Raspberry and Rhubarb and Custard, but none were as popular or as successful as the original.

Over the years the iconic Drumstick Lolly has been adapted to create Drumstick Chew Bars, Drumstick Squashies Gums, Swizzels Matlow Drumstick Lickable and Swizzels Matlow Drumstick Stickpack, whilst the original Drumstick Lolly remains a favourite amongst many children.

Drumstick Lollies are also available in mixed multipacks such as Swizzels Matlow Bumper Bag, Swizzels Matlow Loadsa Chews, Swizzels Matlow Loadsa Lollies and Swizzels Matlow Sweet Shop Favourites Tin.

Refreshers

Another retro classic, Refreshers were launched in 1955 after, that man again, Trevor Matlow discovered a powder could be put inside the chew for an added burst of tanginess. What a job he had!

Unlike anything on the market at the time Refreshers, or New Refreshers, took the country by storm and soon became one of the brands best selling sweet treats.

Like Drumstick Lollies the Refreshers formula was used to create a range of spin off sweet treats including Stickpacks and Refresher Rope Lemon Flavour. The classic 10p Refreshers Chew Bar – Original and Swizzels Matlow 6p Refresher Chews – Original are also available here at Harrisons Direct.

Whilst Swizzels Matlow pride themselves on tradition they’re always looking for ways to move forward, which is why they released the Squashies range in 2013.
